Lights, Camera, Lashes

There comes a time in nearly every woman’s life where she asks the daring question, “Should I take it to the next level?”
Whether it be faux lashes, eccentric nails, a wig or some other next-level beauty trick, special events, or a company headshot, they can be a wonderful assistant in enhancing one’s natural features. My favorite, when it comes to being photographed, is lashes!!
For anyone who did drill team or musical theater growing up - the idea of wearing false lashes can bring about feelings of dread or worry. Thankfully, the products used today look much more natural, and can be the perfect tool for increasing definition and adding emotion to a client’s eyes.
In this blog post, I will touch on some of the many benefits to wearing fake eyelashes for headshot photography. This one step could be the cherry on top for a fabulous final photo!

Creating a focal point
Some people just naturally have striking eyes - fake eyelashes can replicate this same effect for anyone, or simply enhance an already great feature! Applying eyelashes to the client helps ensure that their eyes are the focal point of the final image. Lashes should subconsciously grab the attention of whoever views the final headshot, and naturally draw their gaze toward the subject’s eyes. This can also be one of the easiest ways to distract from any areas of insecurity! In a previous blog, I mentioned Client G, who was able to release some anxiety about the appearance of her jawline once I used makeup to accentuate the beautiful hazel irises she was born with. Through the utilization of false eyelashes, this same technique can be achieved with fewer steps.

Quick way to a luxurious look
Within the last decade, semi permanent lash extensions have become a growing trend in the beauty world. This developed the need for makeup artists to recreate the more natural look of eyelash extensions, instead of applying a striplash. Not only are fake lashes a quick way to add definition to a client’s eyes; they provide an easy avenue to achieve a semi-permanent-lash look without the hassle of maintaining them! To avoid frustration, solicit an artist’s services to apply individual lashes and trio pairs (see above), mimicking extensions. Placing the clusters as close to the client’s natural lashes as possible adds volume and creates definition. After the photoshoot, any individual or trio eyelashes can be removed with regular makeup remover and face wash. I would suggest using the micellar water by La Roche-Posay in conjunction with washable/reusable cotton rounds!

Personalized
The specific practice of individual eyelash application opened up a variety of possibilities for makeup artists. Because the lashes are applied one at a time, there is much more opportunity to create customized looks, depending on the person’s eye shape (and preferences for length and volume). Because each person is unique, expecting a strip lash to achieve “natural” beauty is not a reality. Individual lashes help bring attention and drama to a client’s natural lashes and eyes, without looking over the top - especially when used for headshot photography. As a makeup artist, it is my job to communicate with each client before an event to determine what length and lashes will be placed where. The desired outcome is to achieve a look, which both pleases the client and adds definition to their eyes - without overwhelming them. Headshot-appropriate lashes are enhancing, not show stoppers. With feathery beauties applied, it becomes apparent to the artist where additional work with eyeshadow is necessary. It is much easier to focus on tailoring a look without strip lashes makeup-blocking the ultimate goal!

Comfortable
Individual lashes are a lot more comfortable to wear. When wearing strip lashes, clients’s #1 complaint is the uncomfortability. In our experience, 9 out of 10, immediately remove them after camera-time. By using IL, each client receives a custom blended enhancements, resulting not just in a natural look but a genuine feel as well. It is also a lot easier to remove any specific areas of the eyelashes that could potentially be irritating, readjusting from there. Communication between the makeup artist and client is essential throughout the process to ensure a positive experience.
Overall, the addition of false eyelashes to a makeup service for photography events can provide the client with the confidence to excel in their shoot. Fake lashes are that extra bit of pizazz, taking each client and headshot to the next level. Providing distinction and brightness to the eyes makes for a still genuine, yet brag-worthy professional portrait. The artists we work with at Photography by Misty (including myself) always suggest adding lashes. If you opt to go elsewhere, consider asking the makeup artist to them in your service! It could be the one thing you’re missing.
