As I was sitting in church this week, my mind began to wander. Childlike, I know, but my brain has a tendency to bounce. Admiring my recently updated wedding ring is what started this motion - I started thinking about the three variables which brought this statement piece to fruition.
The diamond and gold solitaire was my Grandpa & Grandma McKean’s updated promise to one another. The band of diamonds across the top was curated from my Grandmother Lewis’s collection. And the third band was recently purchased by my mother. And, for my birthday, my husband had the three married together by our friends at Adore Bijoux Jewelers. My mind was twirling like the reflective properties of a freshly cleaned diamond.
Fun little side note:
As you can see in the picture, my ring is not perfect. The bands don’t match, and I have two size-8 rings & the middle ring is a 7.5. At first, I did not think Mr. Hoang, the president of Adore, would do the work, as he is a perfectionist. However, he laughed and agreed when I said, “I am not perfect, and therefore my ring does not need to be perfect. Actually, I would prefer it not to be.” And, my husband, sweetly said, “What, you’re not perfect?” Ahhhh… the wisdom that comes with age.
Now, back to the story:
Naturally, my train of thought went to the recipe of a successful marriage - God, husband & wife. Then, my mental state drifted to the trinity of our family - God, marriage & children.
Hang in there, this mental roller coaster is starting its descent. Once again, we find ourselves in the House of God when I started thinking about the Holy Trinity itself - Father, Son & Holy Spirit. I realize you are not here for a Biblical lesson, nor am I educated enough to try and explain the Trinity (especially when I barely understand it myself).
What I do know, however, is that the number 3 has been around as long as documented history. According to the beliefs of the Ancient Greek Philosopher Pythagoras, it is the perfect number, representing harmony, wisdom & understanding.
Wow. Is that beautiful to think about or what?
Keep your seatbelts on, as we are about to come to a screeching halt… but first:
I cannot think about the number three without being reminded of a triangle, which in turn finds me thinking about what occupies my brain the most - PHOTOGRAPHY.
Three main things need to be just right in order to create a technically sound photograph. (If you need the deats, I encourage you to take my Introduction to Digital Photography via Collin College’s Continuing Education (at Plano’s Courtyard Campus - a little hidden gem).) Who knows, maybe we’ll end up working together. In the meantime, let's keep it simple:
-
Aperture or f-stop determines how much of the photograph is in focus. If photographing a Dallas Family, more will need to be in focus. If, on the other hand, the PBM team is photographing a stylized product assignment, we want the product to be highlighted with everything else on the bokeh side of things.
-
ISO allows you to shoot in various lighting conditions. Back in the day, trading out the film was the only way to make this happen. Speaking from experience, it could be done but there was a risk involved if not done correctly.
-
Shutter Speed is how long the shutter stays open. Do you want to stop motion, capture it or let the other settings take control?
These three settings go hand in hand to start the process of creating an ideal image. And that, My Friends, is why when you ask a photographer to take a “quick” picture, you might need to slow your roll and practice patience.
Thank you to those of you who hung in there, journeying with me through a bit of family history, attending church, revisiting Ancient Greece & popping into the first 5 minutes of my Collin College class.
