The Things We Do for (self) Love

When our kiddos are Littles, Tweens and Teens, we shake our heads in disbelief at some of the things they do. While we try our best to teach them the ways of the world and to learn from our mistakes, they still end up doing some really dumb-ass things.
However, after watching an Instagram video (posted September 18,2021) posted by Sean Lowe of The Bachelor, I realize our children, too, wonder why we do some of the things we do. (BTW, I am not even a huge fan of the show, but since I know Sean and Catherine personally, I do follow them on SM. Plus Sean is Hilarious!) Don’t we teach them to try their best? In the video, you’ll see Sean’s meek attempt at playing the role of a kitty cat. Though his protege doesn’t shake his little head, you can tell he doesn’t quite understand why Dad isn’t getting into his role.
C’mon, Sean, you’ve seen thousands of cats- you are well aware they don’t walk around on their hind legs.
What in world does this have to do with photography, you might ask. Well, nothing. Like so many of my blogs, it takes me several paragraphs to get to the point.
My mind bounces around like a pinball. One thing leads to another and I started thinking about the way some people prepare, or rather don’t prepare, for a headshot session. We beg our kids not to procrastinate, to lay out plans ahead of time and to show up appropriately. Yet, some of the things we at Photography by Misty encounter, whether we are taking headshots on a formal backdrop at our home studio in Plano (usually with Jenny on a Wednesday) or team portraits at an office park in Dallas, are comical:
-
Nose hairs and awry eyebrows - do men not ever look in the mirror at themselves? We’ve seen eyebrows so out of control that I can’t believe they don’t impede people’s vision.
-
Wrinkled shirts
-
Clothes so tight they don’t even button
-
Or, people bring clothes they wore before they achieved 35 pounds of weight loss. Is anybody in that sea of clothing?
-
Heck, one time a guy showed up post Happy Hour and wondered why he looked so rough in his proofs… gee, I don’t know.
The list goes on and on. I am not trying to be mean. But riddle me this: what would you say to your child who heads off to an intern interview with their hair looking the same way it did when they rolled out of bed, their shirt donning stains from last month’s birthday dinner, all with their shoes untied?
Most of our kids try hard to make us proud. Are you doing the same for them?
Hey, and don’t worry. If you show up less than perfect for your headshot or branding photography session, we really don’t judge that harshly. We do have Photoshop or what we like to call PhoTox. However, that’s our tool to help you look the way you do on your best day, but it’s not really our job to iron your shirt.
