Please Won't You Join Us?
For the event, and maybe even as a future recipient
For years, the Photography by Misty Team has been capturing the Best of Plano event, orchestrated by the Plano Chamber of Commerce. In 2018, I began envisioning being awarded Small Business Person of the Year. However, a Best of Plano Award is not exactly something you set out to achieve. There's no checklist, no job description.
It is a culmination of a lot of things (all of which I am not sure). For instance, activity within the community, how you run your business, how others in the community view you, and how you treat others inside and outside of your business.
The thought had crossed my mind to nominate myself, as a lot of what I do flies under the radar - on purpose. However, my conscious would not allow me to do it. Am I really the best? Maybe, maybe not, but that wasn't for me to decide.
Minus 24 hours from a year ago today, though I did not nominate myself, I was surprised at the Chamber's Friday morning BI event as being named the 2021 Small Business Person of the Year. Dressed as a scarecrow for the holiday celebration. When daydreaming about this day, I did not picture myself wearing overalls and shedding hay. However, those in the room who know me well thought it was absolutley on par.
Fast forward to what has happened since. It was my complete honor to surprise my friend Bob Kehr as this year's recipient. My friend Carol had honored me, and now I get to honor another friend of ours. And.... drumroll please... on November 11, 2022, I will be presenting Bob with his gloriously designed award and have a little brag fest about him. This, along with serving on the voting committee is the BEST part of being honored as one of the best.
Recently, I was asked to host a panel discussion "Breakfast with the Best," interviewing past recipients Carol Davis with Crave Popcorn, Steve McSwain with Arta Travel and Doug Trumbell with Doug's Mighty Clean.
This journey has been incredibly exciting. And it has been an absolutely thrilling ride to grow my business, my community and my network with the help of the Plano Chamber. When I first joined the Chamber more than a decade ago, I knew only Jerry Kezhaya with The Auto Shop (the only place we take our cars), Gary Hirsch with Hirsch's Meats and Henry Gentry with Henry's Homemade Ice Cream. And these boys have some Old-School chamber stories to tell.
Now, of the nine BOP recipients, I call five of them friends and four are community friends/clients of Photography by Misty.
For inspiration, fun and celebration, I do so hope you'll join us at this year's Best of Plano.
