Oh So Many Ways
To use professional photography for your product-based businessby Misty J Hoyt
owner/lead photographerFrom the teeny tiny to the side of a company vehicle, the products we light and shoot help our clients cash in. Afterall, doesn’t a quality product deserve a professional photography session?
Hey, if the marketing team can make it happen themselves, that’s fantastic. However, our typical product photography client has attempted to take product images themselves, even going so far as to purchase equipment, fancy cameras (most just use their phone) and more. They try try again and cannot get the lighting right, just can’t achieve the crisp white backdrop Amazon requires or many times the images shot in their Plano home are literally out of focus. Heck, one of our clients even hired us at consultants because bringing us in every time to shoot their latest and greatest (and these guys create some FANTASTIC products) just wasn’t going to make sense. Oftentimes their products ship out within hours of production. Fast forward several months: they are ultimately going to bring us dozens of products to shoot. Why? I am not exactly sure, but I am guessing that even when you have the right equipment and know what to do with it, shooting it yourself in a corner office in Dallas is not the best use of the company’s manpower?
Typical uses for our product photography include Etsy and Amazon platforms from creators across the nation. However, more and more we are working with electronic companies, who need product photography for their sales catalogs. Engineers build microchips and other small electronic components, which operate power stations and even space shuttles. Technical writers can get the verbiage just right, but it’s a little difficult to make the sale without images. Our clients from McKinney to Downtown Dallas deliver their products, pick them up a week later and viola - they have promotional images to start gaining traction.
Our photography ends up on T-shirts, gift bags, websites (of course), Instagram. However, one day I am headed into the g-store then what to my wondering eyes did appear? My photography work on the side of a pick-em-up truck (yes, most of the images seen here are our handiwork)!! Well, I certainly didn’t know that was going to happen. It doesn’t matter to us where our photography work lands, our clients pay the same price. It could end up on the side of a Dallas skyscraper; we’d actually love that! Some photographers will charge more depending on what clients do with their final images. We DO NOT believe in nickel-and-diming our clients. Once our commercial clients have paid, the images are theirs to use as they wish. I just found the rolling billboard to be a very pleasant surprise.
Almost every week when I network at the Plano Chamber, I see our work on the side of the Elephant Trunk Moving Supplies van. While it’s not about us, it’s about our clients, it is still a great feeling to see our worker almost larger than life.
