It’s our little low-key escape every year to head out to the Ennis Bluebonnets. Since 2015, we’ve rented a little Air B&B Winding Ridge. And we invite our clients out to enjoy a little R&R as well. It’s only 45 minutes from the house so one would think it couldn’t be that great. However, this little slice of 5-acre Heaven is so quaint, quiet, and country that it’s featured in a little coffee table book.
Honestly, we love it so much out there that last year when we had merely one client, we didn’t even care. And, actually, I just gifted that session as the W Family comes out every year. I was feeling really sad they didn’t book - uncertain times/uncertain income. However, it is that much more enjoyable (and helps pay for our stay) when friends come to create family portraits and enjoy the fresh country air.
In 2021, we booked for the weekend of April 16-18, and we’d really like to see you there. Pack a picnic or we’ll pack one for you, don’t be in a hurry once you arrive, as most clients stay and play or hang out. After formal family portraits, there’s plenty to do. Adults and children alike enjoy feeding and petting the horses. I always pack long and juicy carrots, and I enjoy teaching people how to hand-feed a horse while keeping their fingers. And do you know the softest part of a horse? If not, you’ll have to come to feel for yourself...
Porch swings, playhouses, a hot tub, and a huge covered porch are just a few of the amenities our clients enjoy year after year. Before heading home or off to the double-feature drive-in movie theatre, the children are welcome to take a bubble bath in one of the clawfoot tubs, then snuggle into their jammies. By the way, this drive-in is really old school, take the children back to see the projection system and a little added education.
If you decide to book Saturday or Sunday morning, venture into Historic Downtown Ennis after your photography session to do a little dancing to live music, sip a little vino, shop with local arts/crafts vendors, pick up bluebonnet souvenirs, participate in children's activities and do a little carnival eating at the annual Ennis Bluebonnet Festival.
Who knew there was so much to do in Ennis? I have a couple more highlights. From Winding Ridge you can walk a short distance to Sugar Ridge Winery & Bistro. While researching for this blog, I noticed this little gem has grown up quite a bit since I visited last year. They have a small but delicious menu and they oftentimes have live music. And, by the way, you can drive there but then you’d miss talking to the friendly cows along the way.
And, I’m saving the best and most shocking little gem for last. People think I’m crazy, but there is great sushi to be had in Bristol (Bristol, Ennis, and Ferris all bleed into one another, so I use them interchangeably). No kidding. Some of the most beautiful and delicious sushi can be found at Bristol General Store. Don’t like sushi? They have great burgers, too. Check out their videos (don’t be scared; they barely speak in person), which are as diverse as their offerings. As you can see, if you want a seat when they offer live music, which will take you back to hanging out with your grandparents and their friends, you’ll need to get there early. I am probably not going to get anything else done today; the video makes me belly laugh over and over again.
Hope to see you in Ennis, My Friends. If not, take a drive and your own bluebonnet pics. And enjoy a little country while you’re there.
